6 Ways to Make Exercise Fun

It’s easier to get regular exercise when you choose an activity that is more like fun, and less like work. If you’re struggling to find a fitness activity you enjoy, or you don’t like exercising in general, explore these options to make exercising an event you’ll look forward to:

1. Set Goals

Whether your fitness goal is to get in your size six jeans without a struggle, lower your cholesterol, drop 20 pounds, or run a 5k race. Chasing a target is an inspirational way to move toward being fit. Write down your goal and post it where you can see it, like the refrigerator or closet door. Set smaller goals to help you reach the bigger ones. Chart your progress. And when one primary goal is accomplished, it’s time to set another.

2. Celebrate Victories

Stay motivated by celebrating your victories, no matter how small. Tie the rewards into accomplishing your specific goals. For example, if you lose 20 pounds, you’ll get some newer (more modest) workout clothes, or when you finish the 5k race, you’ll eat a favourite treat. Maybe after you’ve biked over 200 total miles, you’ll buy a new bicycle seat or go dancing.

3. Work Out with a Buddy

There is strength in numbers. Try exercising with a workout partner, or two, who can help you stay committed and motivated even on those days when you’re not. Share your goals and show your support for each other without being too pushy. Join a running, hiking, biking or walking group, or a sports team. Take a yoga, dance or Pilates class. It’s a great way to meet others, too.

4. Change of Scenery

If most of your exercise is done in a gym, at home, or the same location every day, look for different places to work out. Get off the treadmill or stationary bike and go outside. Walk, bike, or hike at local parks or trails in your area. Move your yoga to the backyard, by the pool, or to a scenic spot.

5. Play with Fido or Fluffy

Most animals, especially dogs, don’t need to be persuaded to get up and move around as long as they have space, and maybe a toy or two to play with. Walk or run with your dog, get down on the floor and play with your cat. It will help them as much as it helps you. Horseback riding can also be a good workout.

6. Mix it up

No matter how fun an activity starts, doing the same exercise over and over can get monotonous for anyone. While some routine is necessary, being too strict on yourself can harm your fitness goals. It may take you to the point of wanting to stop working out altogether. Rotate your activities to include all muscle groups and find ways to keep it interesting.

By finding ways to enjoy physical activity and make it part of your life, you’ll get all the gain of better health and fitness.
